Hey, just be happy that the nonfunctional scoops are gone.

Sorry for stepping on your lawn. . .

But I will say that I don't know what I think of it yet, I'll reserve my judgement until I see one out in the wild. But I'm not yet a fan of it either, and it isn't the front that bothers me, it is that sloping rear end.

The Porsche 911 lost it's air-cooled engine. Well, the 911 is still with us. Harley Davidsons lost their air-cooled V-twins too. But those are still with us too.

Citroën, once known for it's Magic Carpet Ride hydaulic/pneumatic suspension, is mostly phasing that out too. That gets me personally, because I grew up with Citroëns with the handgrenade-like nitrogen pressure spheres under the hood. But it will survive.

Mustang to loose it's solid rear axle? It will survive too.

Change. It's a bitch. Well, tough, adapt or (proverbially) die.

IRS was a must if Ford wants to compete against the Camaro, but styling didn't hurt anybody. Porsche still is a rear engine boxer... and no one uses air cooled engines anymore. Its like saying, leave carburetors on the mustang.

As someone who grew up with a Mustang, now drives a Mustang, you're wrong?

I hate that what was simply a cost-cutting solution at the time has become a rallying cry for traditionalists. Should we remove seatbelts, traction control, and add whitewalls in the new Mustang because tradition ?

Kinja'd!!! YSI-what can brown do for you > SLR999
12/05/2013 at 06:02

Kinja'd!!!1

It is kind of like Porsche's rear engine design, or Lambos high mounted V12s, both bad designs that companies try to make work. Same with the rear axle with the Mustang. Plus seatbelts and traction control don't get in the way of the driving experience, and I would love to see whitewalls on a modern Mustang.

12/05/2013 at 06:39

Kinja'd!!!8

So you're picking and choosing select style elements to say it's not a Mustang?

If you want to evaluate the front bumper side profile, What about the S197 relative to the Fox Body? does it make the former not a Mustang because it doesn't look like the latter at all?

A product is always more than the sum of all its parts. Don't be stuck in the past, or else it will impede your progress. Ford is in the business of cars, not a hobby.

If you're so adamant the styling should change, do something about... Sue Ford, or become a Ford executive or whatever

Kinja'd!!! The man in the iron mask > SnapUndersteer, Italian Spiderman
12/05/2013 at 06:51

Kinja'd!!!2

So then what you're saying is Porsche got it all wrong with the 911, they are stuck in the past. because they haven't changed Rear engine, nor styling. What about the competition, 2014 Camaro Z28, they are following Chevrolet's Heritage.
Corvette's overhead valve engine? its not usual, but Chevy got it to work perfectly.

And why do you mention the the Fox body, it looked like shit. Mustangs like the boss are the ones the s197 is based on.

Kinja'd!!!2

Hell no, I'm not saying that at all about Porsche..... they persevere with their styling because people still buy it and it works for them while still meeting regulations across the world where the product is sold... the same way you're saying about the Camaro.

I mentioned the Fox Body because it's undeniably a Mustang regardless of preceding iterations. It's arguably the most influential Mustang... It's certainly the most cheap, the most fun to mod out.... The Fox Body is definitely a Ford icon and some can argue even more so than the original one and 2nd gen

Of course... it's not readily apparent fanboys see that as a given.

Are you a fanboy of anything? Have you ever decried the company of which you are fanboy for any recent stuff they've released? Do you also refuse to acknowledge those products because they don't fall in line with their past as neatly envisioned in your mind?

Shit, I've been guilty of that too....but I do get over it very quickly and let the sales numbers speak for themselves..... I remember when BMW released the E9x series of 3ers.... Everyone says it looked like ass and it was porky and it wouldn't sell at all..then BMW set record 3-series numbers with it....Boom and shakalaka

Personally I think the 911 "evolution" is like watching grass grow. It's boring. It's a great car but I would not put it up there as the stalwart for design greatness. They (Porsche) had a good design decades ago and have been too scared to change it. Kudos to Ford for bringing the Mustang into this century (and I love Mustangs, own a 2003, and also had a 1993, another 2003, a 2010 and a 2011). Personally I love it, great long hood, short rear design, classic proportions.

But as others have said, it's not really up to you.

Just stop man, you'll never win with the Fanboy Circlejerk.

I respected the now former Mustang, but this is the first one apart from the Cobra Rs/Terminators that I'd actually put money towards. I like it, I guess that means I'm a commie.

And his 911 comparison is flawed at best. The current 911 is more of an antithesis s to what the old 911 was about, yet I don't see the market that actually spends money doing much bitching about it. Keyword being, spends money.

Ford doesn't give a shit if they upset a few thousand fanboys so long as they get ten thousand sales from interested parties who were considering a Camaro but say this and went "Oh hello there"

Ok, perhaps pushed it too far in exagerating that point.

Still, the story goes that HD did have contact with Porsche in how to manage the transition from air-cooled to water cooled. If only for some makes/models of their bikes. Before that, HD pretty much was an air-cooled V-twin. That's no longer a given.

The Mustang has had IRS long before this one and guess what? As a car it made the Germans look twice on a track. It wasn't cost beneficial then on those platforms, it has become so now.

A Mustang GT with LRA nearly handed the M3 its ass on a track. Ford stated they would never change to IRS unless they could make it even better, so now imagine how lethal of a car this will be for track rats?

No, as another poster said, it's like air-cooled engines in 911s, or manual Ferraris.

Cars have moved on. But no one would argue that water-cooled 911s or dual-clutch Ferraris aren't the real deal when they're so good . You would turn down a 997 GT3 RS4.0, or a 458 Italia?

Kinja'd!!!0

I wouldn't turn either car down, but it their older brothers come around, then it is all over. A Testarossa and a 993 GT2 are just a few dream cars.

Personally, the placement of the engine is more important than how it is cooled as that is what will determine how the car drives. Granted the water cooled one won't sound as awesome. And as for the gated shifter, although I would love one, they probably wouldn't sell much as their customer base consists of rappers.

Kinja'd!!! Victorious Secret > YSI-what can brown do for you
12/05/2013 at 12:55

Kinja'd!!!0

The Cobra Rs, Terminators. 1999-2004 they were made, but the Cobras of then were like the Boss 302s of now.

Ford knew it worked then on the platform but for a price. And they didn't feel compelled to sell it till now, and they're only doing it now because this is a global car. If Ford didn't give a shit about European snobbery they'd keep the LRA.

Kinja'd!!! SLR999 > YSI-what can brown do for you
12/05/2013 at 14:49

Kinja'd!!!0

To each his own. I'd take a GT3 of any gen over the 993, even if the latter was better looking. And I believe when someone like Steve Sutcliffe says a 458 Speciale is the most fun Ferrari. Ever.

Cars are more than the sum of their parts. And the Mustang is more than an axle.
